I'm Afraid to Cook!

"I have to admit, I'm a bit afraid of cooking!"   This was a comment made by Julia, a recent client. Her diet was causing all sorts of problems for her.  We determined that her biggest obstacle to change was eating out! Her diet consisted of take-out or restaurant foods that were high in unhealthy fats, salt, and sugar.  She wasn't getting enough fiber.  She knew she had to change the way she ate but didn't know why she was so resistant. Finally, she had an "aha" moment.   She came to the realization that she was afraid to cook! She had never been "taught" to cook and she didn't feel comfortable in the kitchen. She was afraid she'd "make a mistake and ruin the meal. Does this sound familiar? Read on to see what Julia did... Read More

Did I Just Eat That?! And other confessions...

Nobody’s Perfect…   …thank goodness.   I recently returned from my holiday trip to Puerto Rico.  I had a wonderful time with my family, soaking up the sunshine (and some rain), and enjoying the food and drink the local restaurants had to offer.    Now, here is where the “Nobdy’s perfect” comes in.  I may have overdone it on the food and drink part of this vacation.  I don’t know why.  I usually am pretty good about “eating around” a menu.  But something in me this time was saying, “Try the local cuisine; it’s part of the experience.”  It’s not that I deny myself when I travel, but this time I may have gone a bit overboard.  Think chincharones (fried pork rinds) and mojitos. But also other local favorites like Mofongo (fried plantains) and Pernil (roasted pork.)  I ate way fewer greens than usual because they just didn’t seem to be on the menu.  And while some of my food choices might still have been acceptable in my usual whole food eating plan, others definitely were not!   So why am I confessing this too you?
