There I was as a young girl, up on the stage about to perform in our grade school production of “The Sound of Music.” I was "Mother Abbess", about to launch into my solo “Climb Every Mountain.”
I.Was.So.Nervous.
Who did I think I was singing in front of an audience of hundreds of strangers. (Okay, it was probably less than 100 parents and friends.) But still…
And then it came to that last line before the chorus came in. “For as long as you liiivvveee.” But I knew I couldn’t hit the high note! I tried and tried in practice and my voice just cracked.
I was about to suffer total humiliation.
And then…the chorus came in on the last note to save me! They didn’t tell me they were going to do it.
They just wanted to help me. To make sure I succeeded.
That was many years ago, but I still get emotional remembering how this little bit of support helped me get through my biggest fear. And I felt good. I felt successful. And I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for their support.
I remember this now whenever I’m about to embark on doing something new. When I’m feeling "stuck" it reminds me my fear is what is holding me back from accomplishing things I want.
You’ve probably felt that nagging hesitation – the fear of failure, the fear of judgment, the fear of the unknown - at some point in your life.
???? What if I fail? [So what? Then you learn.]
???? What if I don’t like it [what if you do?]
???? What if others judge me? [Their opinions don’t define you. Only you define you.]
But, behind these fears and perceived obstacles lies the potential for solutions and a renewed sense of beginning. You just need to get to "the other side."
Our fears often become self-imposed limitations, making us believe that change or growth is impossible.
This is especially true as we age.
The "what-ifs" multiply: What if my body can't keep up? What if I get injured? What if others see me struggling? We allow fear to paint a picture of an inevitable decline in our strength and independence.
But what if we shift our focus from the fear of aging to the power of natural solutions for managing joint discomfort? What if discovering new ways to stay active wasn't a sign of slowing down, but a step towards remaining the vibrant person we are inside?
Challenge the Narrative
The first step is acknowledging that the stories we tell ourselves about aches and pains are just that – stories. They don't determine your future; you do. It's time to create new, empowering narratives rooted in strength and resilience!
I hope this helps you take a slightly different look at what fears might be holding you back from making changes in your life.
Managing joint discomfort is an ongoing journey, and your path might look different from others. That's perfectly fine! Remember, it's about discovering effective strategies that work for your individual needs.
