Chinese 5 Spice Pistachios

Prep Time

5 minutes

Prep Notes

This is one of my all time favorite spices! Chinese five-spice powder is a blend of cinnamon, cloves, fennel seed, star anise and Szechuan peppercorns; it adds subtle flavor to these pistachios. Look for it in the spice section at the market or with other Asian ingredients. Omit the added salt if you use salted pistachios.

1 cup

1 tablespoons orange juice

2-3 tsp Chinese five-spice powder

1/2 teaspoon kosher salt or 1 tsp tamari

¾ to 1 cup unsalted pistachios or almonds or any nut or seed of choice

1 tsp coconut oil

1/4 cup raisins (optional)

  1. Position racks in the upper and lower thirds of oven; preheat to 275°F. (250°F convection)
  2. Whisk orange juice, five-spice powder and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Add pistachios; toss to coat.
  4. Divide between 2 large rimmed baking sheets; spread in an even layer.
  5. Bake, stirring every 15 minutes, until dry, about 45 minutes.
  6. Stir in raisins, if using. Let cool completely.
  7. Store in an airtight container.

You can make this with most any variety of nut.  Experiment to see which is your favorite!
